The Acapella is a medical device used in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis. It is used for respiratory disorders where there is an accumulation of thick mucus in the lung. The purpose of the Acapella device is to facilitate breathing by loosening mucus layers in the lung. It is used to promote vibrational activity in the lungs, thereby breaking up mucus and making it easier to clear. This, in turn, aids the flow of air into the lungs for the patient.
The Acapella device may be used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Cystic fibrosis
- Chronic bronchitis
The dose, or method, of Acapella use, depends on the needs of the patient and the severity of their condition. There are different models of the Acapella depending on the breathing standards of the patient. Each patient will be shown how to use the Acapella prior to treatment.
Cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis
- Adults/children: Patients are advised to breathe normally into the Acapella up to five times. Patients should then breathe slowly into the device another five times. At each point, an exhalation should be three times longer than each inhalation. Patients are then advised to alternate between fast and slow breaths – and should be repeated until mucus clearance has been achieved. This entire process may take up to twenty minutes, but experienced patients may achieve this effect in as little as ten minutes.
Acapella Side Effects
There are no adverse side effects of the Acapella, but the patient needs to monitor the amount of mucus they clear. Patients should be able, if the Acapella is used appropriately, to effectively clear the mucus. Patients may, for example, feel as if they haven’t achieved complete clearance. This is entirely normal and should be expected. As patients become accustomed to using the Acapella, these effects subside and the degree of clearance becomes ever more enhanced. Patients who do experience side effects while using the Acapella device should immediately consult their doctor or pharmacist.
There are no drug interactions with the Acapella, as it is a medical device. Nonetheless, patients should inform their doctor of any medication they are taking. Clinicians need to be fully aware of the state of the patient before prescribing this medicine. There may be circumstances in which the prescriber may choose an alternate drug treatment if one of its side effects results in difficulty breathing.
The Acapella is, though, well tolerated – but patients should bear this in mind when they consult their doctor or pharmacist. Patients should also inform their doctor if they experience any undesirable effects from the medication they use in the treatment of their cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, or other respiratory condition that results in mucus build-up.
