Generic Name(s): ezetimibe
Drug Class: Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors
Treats: High Cholesterol
Zetia (ezetimibe) is used to treat individuals suffering from high cholesterol. The drug is part of the cholesterol absorption inhibitors drug class. Zetia helps to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. The drug may be used in combination with other medications or treatment plans, such as diet and exercise plans.
Zetia is used alongside lifestyle changes such as eating a proper diet, weight loss and exercises to reduce the amount of cholesterol found in the blood. Zetia may be taken on its own or together with other medications such as statins.
Zetia belongs to a class of medicines known as cholesterol-lowering drugs. It works by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. In so doing, Zetia helps prevent other conditions such as strokes and heart attacks.
Note that it is advisable that you take Zetia at an interval of 4 hours if you’re using bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine or colestipol. This is because these products contain ingredients that may bind with Zetia, and reduce its efficacy.
