It works by affecting alpha 2 receptors in the brain and spinal cord, which blocks nerve signals from reaching muscles and in turn produces muscle relaxation. Zanaflex is used for the treatment of spasticity, a body condition in which the muscles tighten due to problems like spin injury or multiple sclerosis. This medication works by blocking excessive firing of the nerve cells used to control the movement of muscles, which causes the muscles to relax. The medicine's effects can be felt very quickly, in most cases an hour or less. Tizanidine is also known under the generic name Tizanidine.

Zanaflex dosage is dependent on the individual that it is being administered to. Under no condition should you take the medication in larger amounts than prescribed. It is possible for a doctor to change your dose depending on how your body is reacting to the medication. In most cases, Zanaflex should be taken with a full glass of water and on an empty stomach. The following dosage is an average dose and could differ among individuals. Follow your medical professional's directions for best results.
For general use:
- 3 doses every 24 hours, with 6-8 hours between doses. Do not take more than 3 doses (Average 36 mg) within a 24 hour period.
Zanaflex Side Effects

Less Common Side Effects
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Feelings of numbness
