Vancomycin is an antibiotic that is used for the treatment of intestine infections that cause inflammation of the large intestine (colitis). Vancomycin treats infections caused by Clostridium difficile, which can cause bloody or watery diarrhea. Vancomycin can also be used in treating staph infections that result to inflammation of small intestines and the colon. Vancomycin works by preventing cell wall formation by the bacteria, hence killing or preventing the growth of the bacteria.
Vancomycin HCl is an antibiotic that is taken by mouth to fight bacteria in the intestines. This medication treats a condition known as Clostridium difficile, which is associated with diarrhea. It can also be used to treat staph infections that cause inflammation of the small intestines and the colon. This drug works by stopping the growth of bacteria. When given orally, Vancomycin HCl will work only in the intestines since it is not absorbed in the body. Vancomycin HCL is absorbed into the body where it stops the growth of bacteria. It cannot treat fungal or viral infections of any kind. Vancomycin HCl is given as injection in the case of serious infections.
