Tetrabenazine is used to treat a particular condition referred to as chorea. This is a neurological disorder that is typically characterised by involuntary movements affecting particularly the shoulders, hips and the face. In children, it is caused by a genetic disease, kernicterus and lack of oxygen. In adults, it is caused by nervous system disease, genetic disorder, stroke or tumours. The signs and symptoms of chorea disease include memory loss, dementia and slurred speech, walking difficulties, swallowing difficulties, irritability and depression.
