Sulfatrim Uses

Sulfatrim is a combination of two antibiotics that are; Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. Sulfatrim is used by healthcare practitioners for treating a wide variety of bacterial infections like; Middle ear infection, Urine infection, Respiratory infection, and Intestinal infection. Sulfatrim may also be prescribed by a physician for the treatment of a certain type of pneumonia called Pneumocystis-type. Sulfatrim only treats certain types of bacteria and cannot be used to treat a viral infection. Sulfatrim will not function in patients that have viral infections such as flu. Patients should note that unnecessary use of an antibiotic could lead to its decreased effectiveness. Sulfatrim should be administered orally by mouth as advised by a physician or a pharmacist.

Sulfatrim is used for treating infections in the body that are particularly caused by certain bacteria. Dosage of Sulfatrim depends on the individual and the condition being treated. You should always take medication precisely as your doctor prescribes it. It is important to remember to follow the diet described to you by your doctor while taking Sulfatrim. Below you will find a typical dosage of Sulfatrim.

  • The recommended dosage of Sulfatrim for bacterial infections is four teaspoonfuls 20 mL of Sulfatrim oral suspension that should be administered every 12 hours for a period of 10-14 days.
  • In the case of shigellosis, the same dosage can be administered for approximately five days.
  • For pediatrics, the recommended dosage of the same is 40 mg/kg of Sulfamethoxazole and 8 mg/kg trimethoprim per 24 hours that should be given in two divided doses every 12 hours for a period of 10 days.
