Spiriva, administered through the HandiHaler device, is meant to gradually open and maintain breathing passages in the lungs. Spiriva is contained in a small capsule, to be used only in the HandiHaler device. It is not meant to replace a quick relief inhaler, but can lessen the need for one over time.
Spiriva is an inhalation spray which is prescribed for the treatment of breathing ailments including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma. The generic name of Spiriva is Tiotropium Bromide which is delivered in the dose of 2.5 micrograms per puff. Usually, 2 puffs a day are prescribed.
It must be noted that Spiriva is not an emergency medication. It has a slow moving mist that helps in the slow absorption of the medicine. Therefore, it will not be helpful at the time of emergency. Your doctor will prescribe another medicine for emergency use.
Do not take more than 2 puffs a day. Use Spiriva exactly as prescribed.
