Silvadene Uses

Patients who suffer second and third degree burns are administered with Silvadene to prevent infections. When the wound from burns is left open, it may be susceptible to infection. Silvadene has antimicrobial properties and can help in preventing and treating infections of wounds from serious burns. Silvadene acts on the cell membrane as well as the cell wall to kill the bacteria. By stopping bacteria growth, it helps reduces the risk of bacteria spreading to the surrounding skin or entering the blood where it could result in serious blood infection or wound sepsis.

Silvadene Dosage

Silvadene is applied topically. Before applying the drug, the area should be cleaned and removed of any dead or burned skin. When applying Silvadene, ensure you wear a sterile disposable glove. Ensure you cover the cleaned burned area with about 1/16 inch or approximately 0.2-centimeter thickness of Silvadene cream. If the cream is removed on body by activity or washing, it may be reapplied if necessary. You shouldn't withdraw the use of the drug if there is possibility of infection, unless a serious side effect occurs.

  • Silvadene cream is applied once or twice in a day until the wound heals or the area is ready for grafting.

Silvadene Side Effects

Using topical medications may cause side effects especially on the applied part of body. Some people may not show all the side effects. At times, when the medication is absorbed in body, it may induce side effects all over the body. Patients who experience side effects like pain, burning, and itching that do not subside or go away, they should contact a doctor. If the following side effects develop in your body, call a doctor immediately;

Silvadene Interactions

Silvadene may cause interaction with other medications. Although medications applied topically may have less chances of causing drug-drug interactions with drugs taken orally or injectables, if they are absorbed in blood in large amounts, they could still trigger interactions. A patient should check with a doctor if they are using other medications to find out if there might be possible interactions. The following drugs may interact with Silvadene though the list may be incomplete;
