As a proton pump inhibitor, Protonix decreases the acid from stomach production, thus, treating erosive esophagitis (heartburn) or esophagus damage, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions related to acid excess in the stomach. Protonix blocks the acid-producing stomach wall enzyme, which causes a decrease in the amount of acid, allowing the healing of the esophagus and the stomach. Protonix is not intended for quick relief of heartburn symptoms.

Protonix uses include treating erosive esophagitis, as well as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other health issues caused by too much stomach acid. Erosive esophagitis or heartburn is esophagus damage due to stomach acid, or it is caused by GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, where the stomach acid washes back up into the esophagus.
Protonix addresses the production of acid in the stomach. Protonix relieves symptoms like persistent cough and difficulty in swallowing. It helps prevent intestinal or stomach ulcers, acid damage to the esophagus and stomach and even esophagus cancer. There may be other Protonix uses not listed in Protonix medication guides but only determined by the doctor. Protonix is only available with a doctor's prescription.

Protonix dosage varies in patients. For the medical problem it will target, the doctor will consider the medicine's strength, number of daily doses, doses time interval and length of time the patient takes Protonix.
Protonix dosage forms are in tablet, enteric coated and packet. There is also Protonix I.V. or injection for short-term treatment of those adults with erosive esophagitis or GERD in just about 7 to 10 days. Protonix should not be taken smaller or larger doses than prescribed. Tablets should be taken with or without food, and half an hour prior to a meal. It should not be broken, chewed or crushed, but swallowed as a whole, as its coating may be damaged when the pill is broken.
- For adults with erosive esophagiti, 40 mg daily up to 8 weeks or longer as per doctor's prescription.
- For adults with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, initial of 40 mg twice daily, the increment of which will be determined by the doctor.
- For children, Protonix dosage will be determined by the doctor.
- The recommended adult dose is 40 mg pantoprazole given once daily by intravenous infusion for 7 to 10 days. It should be stopped when the patient will receive Protonix oral suspension or tablets.
