Imitrex may be used to treat migraines and cluster headaches. It works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain.
Imitrex may also decrease the substances in the body that can trigger migraines, nausea and sensitivity to light. The medication can only be used to treat a migraine that is already there. It can not prevent or reduce risks of one from getting a migraine. The medication should only be used if prescribed by a doctor.
- Migraine and cluster headaches
The Imitrex dosage that one is given is usually dependent on their medical condition at the time. The medication is usually taken with or without food through the mouth. It is usually taken at the first sign of a migraine. If the headache comes back, one may take another dosage at a period of at least two hours after the previous dosage.
- The recommended dosage for the tablets is 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg doses.
- The 50mg and 100mg doses usually provide more effect than the 25 mg doses.
- The 100mg dose may however have less effect than the 50 mg doses.
- One should not take more than 200mg of the Imitrex drug within 24 hours.
