Allergic Rhinitis, also known as allergies or hay fever, occurs when an individual is allergic to certain air particles or allergens. The inhaled allergens cause an inflammation in the nasal airways. The individuals immune system targets the allergens or particles that enter the body and attacks them, resulting in certain symptoms. When the immune system attacks the allergens, it releases histamines, causing the allergy symptoms. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. Allergies can occur at different times throughout the year and effect everyone differently. They can also lead to sinusitis or sinus infections and ear infections. Allergic rhinitis is fairly common.

Allergic Rhinitis Causes

There are many different allergens that trigger allergic rhinitis. Depending on the individual, the allergen may cause the body to release histamines in the body causing the allergy symptoms. Individuals may have seasonal allergies, while others can have allergies all year round.

Outdoor Allergens

  • Pollen from greens, grasses, weeds

Indoor Allergens

  • Dust mites
  • Animal dander
  • Cockroaches
  • Mold

Allergic Rhinitis Diagnosis

Allergic rhinitis is diagnosed through allergy testing by a medical professional or specialist known as an allergist. The most common form of testing is through skin tests. Skin testing is when the medical professional places a small amount of allergen on the skin to see if the individual is allergic to it. There is a blood test known as RAST blood test, that can also be used to determine if an individual is suffering from allergic rhinitis.

  • Skin Tests: patch, scratch, intradermal tests
  • RAST Blood Test

Allergic Rhinitis Treatment

There are a few different ways that an individual can manage its allergic rhinitis. One of the first steps is determining what is causing the allergic rhinitis. Once this has been determined, the necessary precautions can take place to help reduce the symptoms and inflammation of the nasal airways.

  • Antihistamines
  • Corticosteroids
  • Decongestants
  • Allergy shots (Immunotherapy)
