Drug Name: Flonase
Generic Name(s): Fluticasone propionate
Drug Class: corticosteroids
Treats: nasal inflammation

Flonase, or Fluticasone propionate, is a steroid nasal spray that prohibits substances in the body from contributing to inflammation by hindering its effect on multiple cell types and mediators involved with inflammation. Inflammation, part of the body's immune system, is a biological response to remove harmful stimuli, irritants, or pathogens in the body. The five signs of inflammation include pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat. Flonase is used to improve breathing functions during this inflammation process and decrease overall inflammation in the nasal passages. Flonase is in the class of drugs known as corticosteroids, specifically glucocorticoids, which are hormones that affect the metabolism of carbohydrates and fat and protein.

Flonase Dosage

The correct dosage of Flonase is dependent on age and should not be used for anyone under the age of four. The dosage may also vary depending on the medical condition it is being used to treat. Consult with your doctor or medical professional for the correct dosing.

  • Adults: The recommended starting dosage in adults is two sprays at 50 mcg each in each nostril once daily. This is a total daily dosage of 200 mcg. The same dosage divided into 100 mcg given twice daily is also effective. After the first few days, patients may be able to reduce their dosage to 100 mcg (1 spray in each nostril) once daily for maintenance therapy.
  • Children (Age 4+): Patients should be started with 100 mcg, one spray in each nostril once daily. Patients that don't adequately respond to 100 mcg may use 200 mcg, two sprays in each nostril. Once control is achieved, the dosage should be decreased to 100 mcg (1 spray in each nostril) daily. It is recommended that the maximum total daily dosage doesn't exceed two sprays in each nostril at 200 mcg per day.
