Effexor is a medication used in the treatment of psychiatric conditions including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. The active ingredient, venlafaxine, belongs to a class known as serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). In other words, Effexor increases the availability of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain and, as a result, the mood of patients has the potential to rise. There are, of course, risks with all psychiatric medication, not least the risk of inducing suicidal ideation. However, Effexor has proven to be effective in the long-term treatment of many mentally disabling conditions.
