Welchol is used to treat to treat both, type-2 diabetes and high cholesterol. By treating these conditions, Welchol can help prevent strokes, heart attacks, kidney damage, blindness, and more. Welchol is a medicine used in the treatment of high cholesterol levels, a condition known as hypercholesterolemia. Welchol belongs to the bile acid sequestrant group of medicines, a group whose mechanism of action is to inhibit the reabsorption of bile acids. By doing this, Welchol indirectly converts dietary cholesterol to bile acids. The active ingredient of Welchol is a drug called colesevelam. It's been shown to not only reduce harmful cholesterol (LDL), but it has also been shown to increase beneficial cholesterol (HDL) levels. Welchol is only available for administration via the oral route. Common side effects with Welchol include constipation, stomach upset, nausea, headache, and cold-like symptoms.
