Topamax (topiramite) is a seizure medicine, also called an anticonvulsant. It is available as a generic drug. It is an anti-epileptic or anti-seizure drug used primarily for patients who are not controlled by other anti-epileptics drugs. Seizures are caused by abnormal activity of the nerves in the brain which spreads to small or larger portions of the brain.
Topamax (topiramate) is a drug used to prevent migraine headaches and reduce how often they occur. Topamax is also used alone or with the combination of other drugs to prevent and control seizures. Topamax is a daily prescription drug that is taken as long as the doctor recommends that the patient needs it.
Topamax belongs to a class of medications known as anticonvulsants. When the nerve cells become over overexcited, they release electrically charged particles. When too many particles are released, a migraine occurs. Topamax works by calming nerves in the brain. By “calming” the overexcitable nerve cells, Topamax helps reduce the intensity and occurrence of migraines.
