Famotidine is part of the drug class known as, histamine-2 antagonists. This type of drug is used to treat heartburn, gastric and duodenal ulcers, acid indigestion, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and others. Certain types of Famotidine are available over the counter. Famotidine is a histamine-2 blocker that is used in treating and preventing stomach ulcers. The medicine works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is worth noting that ulcers are caused by excess acid in the stomach. Famotidine works by treating conditions such as the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which are known for triggering the stomach to produce too much acid. Famotidine is also used in treating GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). This is a condition where the acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus causing heartburn. Some of the ulcers that Famotidine treats are duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers and peptic ulcers. Avoid this drug if you are allergic to any of the ingredients making Famotidine.
