Bentyl is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. It blocks the effects of acetylcholine, the chemical transmitter produced by nerves for the muscles to contract, thereby, preventing muscle contraction. Since this drug has a direct relaxing effect on the muscle, it is also used to reduce the contraction of intestinal muscles.

For liquid Bentyl, a measuring spoon or device should be used instead of the usual household spoon for the correct dose, then mix the medication with water in equal amount before taking it.
